“As American as apple pie” is a common expression, but neither sweet apples nor pie were developed in America. Apples were first cultivated in Asia and traded to Europe. It wasn’t until the 14th century when a master chef of King Richard III discusses how to make “Tartys in Applis”—apple tarts. The pilgrims who landed in Jamestown brought their apple seeds with them and favored them over the sour crabapple, the only indigenous apple in America, for larger, sweeter, more productive fruit.
Apple Pie Spice can be used for more than just Apple Pie. It is great sprinkled in your coffee, roasted root vegetables, savory stews and even as a brisket rub (don't knock it till you tried it).
